Nepal is experiencing one of its most turbulent moments in recent history as massive youth-led protests have erupted across the country, sparking violent clashes with security forces and forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. At least 19 people have been killed and over 100 injured in the protests, which began after the government imposed a sweeping ban on major social media platforms, triggering widespread outrage among young people.

The demonstrations, known as the “Gen Z Protests,” quickly escalated in Kathmandu and other cities, with thousands of students and young protesters taking to the streets to demand an end to corruption and government censorship. Security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and even live ammunition, leading to fatalities and widespread injury. Protesters managed to breach the parliament compound, set government buildings and politicians’ homes on fire, and brought parts of the capital to a standstill.

Despite the government’s decision to lift the social media ban, anger over corruption and abuses of power continues to fuel unrest. Multiple ministers have resigned, a nationwide curfew has been imposed, and curbs on movement remain in effect in several cities. Observers warn that Nepal faces a prolonged period of political and social instability as the youth demand accountability and a new generation steps into the spotlight of national dissent.
