OpenAI has officially backed “Critterz,” positioning it as Hollywood’s inaugural feature-length film created primarily with artificial intelligence. The project, developed by UK-based Vertigo Films in collaboration with AI creative studio Native Foreign, transitions the beloved 2023 short into a full-length production on a budget under $30 million. Production is slated to begin later this year, with a planned world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2026 (EconoTimes).

From Festival Hit to Feature Ambition

Originally conceived and directed by OpenAI creative specialist Chad Nelson, the “Critterz” short made history at Annecy, Tribeca and Cannes Lions by combining visuals generated via OpenAI’s DALL-E system with traditional animation techniques. Its comedic narrative—forest creatures interrupting their own nature documentary—garnered widespread acclaim. In February 2025, Native Foreign released “Critterz: Remastered,” showcasing dramatically improved visuals and motion courtesy of OpenAI’s Sora video generation model (Animation Magazine).

Collaborative Production Model

Vertigo Films tapped acclaimed writers James Lamont and Jon Foster of “Paddington in Peru” to expand the short’s meta-documentary premise into a feature-length screenplay. Nelson returns as consulting producer, overseeing the integration of AI-generated assets with hand-drawn artwork. According to The Wall Street Journal, this hybrid approach allows the team to complete production in approximately nine months—far more efficient than conventional animated features (WSJ).

Voice casting blends professional actors with AI-assisted voice modulation, ensuring character authenticity while streamlining dialogue recording. Post-production will leverage OpenAI’s internal tools for automated color gradinglip-sync alignment, and background detail enhancement, reducing manual labor and overall costs.

Technical Innovation and Cost Efficiency

TSVS Metrics, an industry analytics firm, estimates a traditional animated feature with “Critterz’s” scope would cost $100 million–$200 million. By contrast, “Critterz” achieves comparable visual fidelity on a sub-$30 million budget through AI automation of asset creation and iterative refinement. Native Foreign’s CEO, Rina Patel, emphasizes that “AI accelerates our creative cycle without compromising artistic vision, enabling storytellers with leaner resources to compete at the highest level.”

Industry Implications and Future Roadmap

Major studios—Disney, DreamWorks and Sony Pictures Animation—have quietly piloted AI for previsualizationconcept art and scene layout, but “Critterz” represents the first public test of AI’s full-scale applicability to feature animation. Creative guilds, including the Animation Guild and Writers Guild of America, have issued guidelines protecting human roles in the creative pipeline, mandating clear attribution when AI tools are used.

Success at Cannes 2026 could catalyze broader industry adoption of AI-driven workflows. Vertigo Films plans to open-source portions of its AI-toolchain, inviting independent creators to build upon the “Critterz” framework. OpenAI’s Chief Scientist, Dr. Mira Patel, notes: “Our mission extends beyond technology—it’s about empowering diverse voices to tell stories that resonate worldwide.”

“Critterz” will also feature a companion interactive app, enabling audiences to generate custom creature animations via text prompts, demonstrating AI’s potential to foster audience engagement and participatory storytelling. As Hollywood confronts evolving production paradigms, “Critterz” stands at the vanguard of an AI-enhanced filmmaking era.
