Optimize work and maximize outcomes with the next generation of AI Companion for Zoom Workplace

Zoom unveiled AI Companion 3.0 at its annual Zoomtopia 2025 conference on September 17, marking a major evolution toward agentic artificial intelligence that extends beyond traditional video conferencing. The upgraded assistant introduces revolutionary cross-platform functionality, enabling seamless operation not only within Zoom meetings but also across Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, with Cisco WebEx support expected later (Zoom News).

“Our customers’ most important conversations happen on Zoom, and now those conversations can result in critical insights to fuel real progress,” said Eric S. Yuan, Zoom’s founder and CEO, during the virtual conference. “With AI Companion 3.0, our agentic AI can understand users’ specific context, priorities, and goals to help them cut through the noise, focus on what matters most, and drive meaningful business outcomes.”

Enhanced Note-Taking and Cross-Platform Integration

The most significant advancement centers on AI Companion 3.0’s expanded note-taking capabilities, which now functions across multiple platforms and in-person meetings. According to Smita Hashim, Zoom’s chief product officer, users can now “jot down quick thoughts, and AI Companion can capture, expand on, and organize the key takeaways by enhancing the notes and highlighting key takeaways” (TechCrunch).

The cross-platform functionality addresses the fragmented nature of modern workplace collaboration, where teams frequently switch between different video conferencing platforms throughout their workday. This development positions Zoom to compete directly with specialized meeting note-taking services like Read AIOtterFireflies, and Granola. The assistant now retrieves and synthesizes information from internal enterprise sources including meeting transcripts, chat history, and shared documents, while incorporating external data when needed. This agentic retrieval capability extends to Google and Microsoft platforms when enabled by users.

Time Management and Scheduling Intelligence

A standout feature dubbed “free up my time” analyzes calendars, user roles, and daily tasks to suggest which meetings can be skipped, with AI-generated notes still provided by meeting hosts to keep users informed. This scheduling intelligence also includes automatic conflict detection when participants book different rooms for the same meeting (UC Today).

The assistant provides proactive meeting preparation by sending advance prompts that allow attendees to familiarize themselves with agendas, review previous action items, and identify key insights needed for productive discussions. These calendar management features mirror capabilities offered by specialized tools like Clockwise, signaling Zoom’s expansion into comprehensive productivity management.

Photorealistic Avatars and Visual Enhancements

Zoom announced photorealistic AI avatars launching in December 2025, allowing users to maintain a professional presence even when they’re not “camera-ready.” The avatars track users’ movements and facial expressions in real time, synchronizing them with the virtual display during meetings (The Verge).

To address potential misuse concerns, Zoom plans to implement Live Camera Authentication to verify that the face in the camera matches the uploaded photo, with in-meeting notifications indicating when an AI avatar is being used. As Hashim noted, “specific enrollment and authentication processes may evolve prior to its general release.” The feature represents progress toward CEO Yuan’s vision of “digital twins” that could eventually handle routine tasks and decision-making.

Real-Time Translation and Global Accessibility

Launching alongside the avatars in December, Zoom will introduce real-time voice translation capabilities supporting nine languages: EnglishGermanChineseFrenchSpanishArabicJapanesePortuguese, and Italian. This AI-powered feature will allow participants to hear speakers in their preferred language without delay, enhancing global team collaboration.

Pricing and Market Strategy

AI Companion 3.0’s core features will be available in November 2025 at no additional cost for paid Zoom Workplace users. Organizations seeking customized solutions can access the Custom AI Companion add-on for $12 per user per month, enabling administrators to create and deploy custom AI agents using a low-code builder with pre-built templates (Business Standard).

The announcement comes as Zoom reported its highest revenue growth in 11 quarters during its most recent earnings, with analysts viewing the AI push as central to the company’s growth strategy. By extending beyond its core video conferencing platform to offer comprehensive productivity tools, Zoom positions itself to compete with integrated workplace suites while maintaining its meeting-centric identity.
